Business Manager, Ascension Church (Episcopal)

Ascension Church is seeking an experienced Business Manager to service our Episcopal Parish located at Fifth Ave and West 10th Street, Greenwich Village, New York.

The ideal candidate has at least 3-5 years of experience as a manager in a non-profit, government, academic, religious or corporate setting. They will serve as the rector’s trusted advisor on the finances, personnel, building management and business affairs of the parish. The candidate should have strong supervisory, financial and communication skills, as well as the ability to establish and maintain collegial and productive working relationships with ward clergy, staff, lay leaders, parishioners and volunteers. The candidate must embody values ​​of integrity and discretion, and show commitment to Ascension mission and culture, without hoping to join the church.

The main responsibilities include:

  1. Finance
    Supervise the part-time accountant, who reports to the sales manager
    Manage the church’s operating budget, cash flow, payroll monitoring, accounts receivable and payable, timely payment of bills, monthly review of bank and investment statements , and management of all accounts and financial workflow, financial controls and record keeping
    Work with the treasurer and the finance committee to develop the annual budget
    Prepare financial information, analysis and projections, including up-to-date monthly financial reports and other additional information as needed for the finance committee and the sacristy. Attend monthly finance committee meetings
    Track all annual stewardship pledges and donations to the church, and provide support to the stewardship committee for the annual stewardship campaign
    Support the investment committee, the finance committee and the treasurer with regard to the endowment portfolio and the investments of the parish
    Ensure that the annual parish audit is completed on time by the appointed auditor and implement all recommendations resulting from the audit
    Prepare the annual parish report in collaboration with the rector and the treasurer
  2. Building management
    Supervise Sexton staff in close consultation with the rector
    Oversee church properties, facilities and inventory with other church staff
    Working with church staff, ensure that all property maintenance and use issues raised by users of church space are handled appropriately and in a timely manner.
    Develop long and short term maintenance schedules and facilitate compliance
    Support the buildings and grounds committee, including planning long-term improvement projects
    Negotiate all insurance, long-term leases, or contracts of one year or more with service providers and users of church facilities and spaces, in close coordination with the ward administrator and with the approval of the rector and guardians
    Check and maintain records of all suppliers and maintenance and service providers
  3. Staff and general
    Maintain confidential employee files including salary, employee benefits and all leave earned and taken. Work with the personnel committee to ensure that human resources policies, procedures and benefits are up to date and implemented
    Onboard new recruits, in accordance with church policies
    Ensure the church is in compliance with all local and federal laws
    Special projects and tasks assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the church

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in commerce, finance / accounting or relevant equivalent experience
3 to 5 years of experience as a manager in a non-profit, government, academic, religious or corporate setting
Strong financial, communication (written and verbal) and computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and financial accounting software
Excellent organizational and leadership skills including the ability to collaborate, lead teams and adapt to changing needs and circumstances
Applicants who are a Chartered Accountant, or who know the Episcopal Church or the leadership of a nonprofit organization are a plus

Type of employment
The Commercial Director is a new full-time / exempt position and reports to the Rector
Preferred start date is July 2021
The position is thirty-five hours per week from Monday to Friday, working in the offices of the church
Salary is based on experience, plus a generous benefits package
