Gregory Flanigan

Gregory Flanigan, 85, died Thursday, January 13, 2022. He was born January 19, 1936, in Salamanca, NY, and grew up in Jamestown, NY, where he attended St. James Parish Elementary School and graduated from Jamestown. High school in June 1954. He then joined the United States Navy in July 1954 and served four years, spending three of those years as a sonarman aboard the destroyer USS James C. Owens. While visiting relatives in Elyria, Gregory met Martha Kiser, whom he later married on June 20, 1959.

Gregory is survived by his beloved wife, Martha; daughters: Molly Parsson of Brunswick and Laura Kelling of Columbia Station; sons: Michael and Daniel, both of Elyria, and John of Lake Orion, Michigan. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; great-granddaughters; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Anna Flanigan; brothers: James and Joseph; sister, Patricia Hodder; and his son, James.

Gregory attended Jamestown Community College and Finn College in Cleveland, pursuing a career in the financial industry, ending with Erie Shore Mortgage. He has been a member of St. Jude’s Church since 1959. He played slo-pitch softball for the Elyria Eagles and St. Mary’s Church, and served as the Eagles’ treasurer for over 20 years. He had a keen interest in the history of American wars and was a member of the James C. Owens Association, both director and historian, and attending meetings from 1993 to 2017. He also sponsored the Flanigan Family Reunions from 1992 to 2010.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 18 from 3-5 p.m. at Reichlin-Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria. Funeral Mass will be held at St Jude’s Church, 590 Poplar St., Elyria on Wednesday, January 19 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the St. Jude Food Pantry in his memory.
