John R. Frey of Linden, Pa. Recently passed away in a country he loved, in the sun by the sea.

Born in South Williamsport, John was an attentive student and, like his entire life, was invested in everything he studied.

As a young teenager, John dedicated himself to ministry and was active in youth camps. John’s family worked in the tire business where John worked many long and hard hours, becoming a master craftsman in the field of tire retreading.

John then moved to the financial industry, running a local finance company before moving to banking for over 32 years.

Through his education and extensive training, John implemented the Secondary Market Mortgage Program before becoming Chief Compliance Officer. His compassion in helping clients and mentoring his colleagues was a badge he wore well.

Having met the love of his life when he was young in an orthodontist’s office and reconnecting by shoveling snow in Market Square, John and his wife Barbara shared 36 years together. Adventure was truly John’s middle name, portering canoes in Canada and then sharing many great adventures with his wife. An outdoor enthusiast through and through, he spent many days in the garden, hiking, hunting and fishing.

Sponsoring a church baseball team in Villa Migante (PIFB & S), DR, John and his wife shared his passion for baseball. His last great joy in life was spending his time in the islands, where he chose to go after losing his battle with heart disease.

John is survived by his wife Barbara, his two sons, Josiah and Joel, (both veterans), his mother, his brother, his sister, his sister-in-law, five grandchildren and his beloved rescue dog. Strong and motivated person who measured himself perfectly, his death left an immeasurable void in those he knew and loved.

“It is good to have an end to walk towards; but it’s the journey that counts in the end.– E. Hemmingway.

Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, Inc., Toby and Abbey are helping the family through this immense time of mourning. An island-style commemorative rally will take place on Monday, January 17, 2022. A time will be announced at a later date.

In honor of John, please perform an act of kindness, donate to a veterans organization, homeless shelter, or animal rescue.
