Use up what’s left in your kitchen with our top tips
THE run-up to Lent is traditionally a time for using up what’s left in your kitchen cupboards, ahead of a period of fasting.
But whether or not you are religious, a clear-out can save you money because you will be able to see what needs eating before its use-by date — and so cut waste.

Here’s what to do with all those forgotten larder items you unearth.
NOT SO FAST: Most of the stuff in your cupboards will have a super-long life span, so do make sure to check carefully before chucking anything away.
Tins of tuna, for example, can last for up to three years. Store anything you open in airtight containers to keep them fresh.
Ikea’s Pruta set of 17 tubs is £4.
SOUP IT UP: Don’t fancy that old tin of soup? Add it to a stew for extra flavour.
Beef stews are all the better with some oxtail soup thrown in. Veggie soups work in pretty much any casserole.
SQUEEZY CLEANING: As well as being delicious on pancakes, lemon juice is a brilliant natural cleaner for your microwave.
Add a quarter of a cup to two cups of water in a bowl, then heat in the microwave until it’s full of steam.
Leave for five minutes, then carefully remove the container. Wipe the inside of the microwave and you’ll find removing the dirt is simple.
BEANZ MEANZ SAVINGS: Got too many tins that you never get through?
Add baked beans to cottage pie. Stir the beans into the mix once you’ve browned the beef mince.
See heinz.co.uk/beanz for more recipes.
BEE GENTLE: Honey can be a soothing face moisturiser.
Just apply it to your skin, leave it on for 15 minutes then rinse with warm water.
APPY DAYS: Download the NoWaste app, which allows you to log your shopping and set up reminders for when items are going out of date.
Plus, list anything you don’t want on the Olio app, so someone else can make use of it.
